Song of the Day: Sneaker Pimps

26 02 2010

Sneaker pimps is one of a plethora of bands that always seem to blast out of the British Isles with talent and potential only to disappear suddenly. Here we have not only a track that is strong musically, but also acts as a type of time capsule. The time was the mid-90′s, a period when Ecstasy was making our friends a little to touchy-feely, an era when Elizabeth Shue was once again the subject of American wet dreams. Indeed it was one of those Shue induced fantasies that put Sneaker pimps on the map. A mostly forgotten film named “The Saint” made a very small wave with what was actually a mostly decent soundtrack comprised of electronic music.

Many people have tossed mud at the Sneaker Pimps for being on the softer (read: marketable) side of electronic music of the period. Personally I have no problem with that since most electronic music sound like awkward robot sex to me. Yes, yes, I know it is all the rage in Europe. I, for better or worse, am an American and require my music to be made with at least one identifiable instrument. The Sneaker Pimps are a nice little bridge between electronic haters like myself and glowstick twirling ravers stuck in ’96. Enjoy.
